Si parte ad ora di pranzo, e dopo circa 45 minuti raggiungiamo il tranquillo paesino di Roccamorice. Lasciamo la macchina all’imbocco del sentiero ben segnato e dopo circa quaranta minuti di cammino tra boschi e bei panorami, raggiungiamo l’imbocco della cavità. Delle ripide scalette scolpite nella roccia conducono al livello dell’eremo, dove si apre la vista verso il gioiello di architettura rupestre. L’eremo è anteriore al XII secolo ma fu restaurato da Pietro da Morrone, papa Celestino V, intorno al 1250, e lì visse per 2 anni. L’eremo è costituito da una piccola cappella e da due stanze scavate nella roccia. Purtroppo gli affreschi sulla facciata sono danneggiati. Visitato l’interno dove è presente una statua lignea del santo, scendiamo verso il fiume per ammirare la vista dell’eremo dal basso. Arrivati giù al fiume facciamo una bellissima scoperta, il fiume è abitato da una comunità di geo tritoni, lucertoline d’acqua.
