Il primo di maggio a Cocullo, nell’aquilano, si festeggia San Domenico e, come per altre usanze in cui il rito pagano si intreccia con la devozione cristiana, in questa occasione la devozione per San Domenico, protettore dal morso dei serpenti, si intreccia con il rito arcaico dei “serpari”, manipolatori dei serpenti, nel suggestivo quanto unico Rito dei Serpari. La prima fase della festa consiste nella ricerca e nella cattura dei serpenti (tutti rigorosamente non velenosi) che cominciano ad essere raccolti quando inizia a sciogliersi la neve, da persone esperte dette serpari. Queste osservano le stesse tecniche dei serpari antichi anche se allora i rettili venivano posti in recipienti di terracotta, ora in cassette di legno.
La festa ha inizio con la folla che incomincia a tirare coi denti la campanella della cappella di San Domenico, all’interno della chiesa omonima. Secondo la tradizione, questa cerimonia servirebbe a proteggere i denti dalle malattie che li potrebbero affliggere.
A mezzogiorno inizia la processione della statua del santo invasa dalle serpi catturate nei giorni prima che parte dalla chiesa di San Domenico e prosegue per le stradine del centro storico.
Ai fianchi della statua del Santo, due ragazze vestite in abito tradizionale, portano sulla testa un cesto contenenti cinque pani sacri, questi pani vengono chiamati “Ciambellani”. In memoria di un miracolo che fece San Domenico, i pani sacri vengono donati per antico diritto ai portatori della Sacra Immagine e del gonfalone.
Al termine della festa, i rettili vengono riportati al loro habitat naturale dai serpari e Cocullo ritorna ad essere un dormiente paesino di montagna in attesa della prossima festa dei serpari!

These look the same techniques of ancient serpari although then the reptiles were placed in earthenware jars, now in wooden boxes. The festival begins with the crowd begins to pull with his teeth the bell of the chapel of San Domenico, inside the church. According to tradition, this ceremony would serve to protect the teeth from diseases that may afflict them. At noon begins the procession of the statue of the saint invaded by snakes captured in the days before it starts from the church of San Domenico and continues through the narrow streets of the old town.At the sides of the statue of the saint, two girls dressed in traditional dress, carry on their heads a basket containing five loaves sacred, these breads are called “chamberlains”. In memory of a miracle that made San Domenico, the sacred bread are donated by ancient right to the holders of the sacred image and the banner. At the end of the festival, the reptiles are returned to their natural habitat by serpents and Cocullo again a dormant mountain village waiting for the next festival of the serpents!
